Including general public in Madhana scheme
Health Minister, Aminath Jameel, announced today that the general public can now participate in the Madhana Scheme(Govt. Staff health insurance scheme). It has been a year since it was started and to me, it seems a viable way to include health benefits for all.
Health benefits were stopped for our family except me when the new government came to power as one of the first ways to minimize govt expenditure. But, now that this opportunity has been opened to all to participate in the scheme, I would not hesitate to enroll my family in the scheme as it is the best health insurance scheme available as of now.
Although the plan at the innital stage of Madhana was to give health insurance freely to all government staff, then to the most needy, and gradually give it to everyone in the long run, and the ultimate to give free healthcare for all.
But maybe because of our economic crisis, we had to pay some amount annually to participate in the scheme. To me, I think it is alright considering the fact that the offer by Madhana was worth it. It is widely accepted throughout Maldives and it’s services are also available in neighboring countries.
I’m not sure about how to apply for it in detail but it is worth finding out as soon as possible. I hope soon, that our economy would be better and everyone would benefit from free healthcare system.
*Update*
Found out that I no longer was in “Madhana” scheme. My new employer uses Allied Insurance because very recently govt decided that “Musthaqillu Muvassassaathah”(I dunno the correct definition of this, independent offices of govt. where the actual government doesn’t have full authority to do things) should not be included. So, technically I don’t have a choice other than Allied’s scheme for me. BUT, Madhana is my choice for my family even if I had to pay the full amount of RF2000/-
